2011 Floor Hockey Provincial Championship Summary

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

by Darren Inouye

The Vancouver C Division floor hockey team took to the courts at UBC on Feb 18th & 19th for the provincial championships. After a smooth seeding round Vancouver’s first challenge was a very tough Mission team. A back and forth battle the two teams swapped goals until the third when Vancouver with a late goal tied the game 7 -7. The game would finish in a draw. Next up was a team Vancouver had not faced before, Campbell River. A good game with the difference being Campbell River’s ability to capitalize on numerous power plays, the score ended up 5 – 1 Campbell River. Going into day two Vancouver had an early morning game vs Coquitlam. Quick out of the blocks Vancouver opens the scoring to go up by a few goals, Coquitlam comes back to draw close but Vancouver keeps the pressure on and eventually wins the game. With one win, a loss and a tie Vancouver needs Campbell River to tie or beat Mission in the final game of the round robin in order to advance to the gold medal game. On the edge of our seats the team watches an extremely close game between Campbell River and Mission. Campbell River scores a few late goals and cements the final, Vancouver vs Campbell River. An intense game Vancouver and Campbell River meet in the final and through the first period and half the game is as close as it could be with Campbell River holding a very slight 1 – 0 advantage. Vancouver could never break through though offensively eventually surrendering a number of goals in the final half of the game. A brave attempt and excellent tournament Vancouver finishes proudly with silver.

Snowshoeing End of Season Recap

Monday, March 8th, 2010

The lack of snow that affected Vancouver and the local mountains this past winter failed to dampen the spirits of our snowshoeing team. The season got off to an adventurous start with our athletes and coaches trekking through the snowshoe trails of Cypress Mountain. Snow wasn’t all they braved during their weekly practices, as the mild winter revealed fallen branches, running streams, and watery mud.

As the Winter Olympics descended on Vancouver, Cypress Mountain was closed to the public, prompting our group to relocate to Kitsilano Beach. There, our athletes trained by snowshoeing on the sand to a cheering audience of Sunday morning strollers and joggers.

Snowshoe End of Season Report

The season culminated on February 26-28, with four of our athletes and two coaches travelling to Campbell River to the snowshoe qualifiers held at Mount Washington, which had an abundance of snow. Athletes from all over, from Victoria to Kelowna, engaged in an exciting display of athleticism, sportsmanship and competition. In the end, Vancouver’s Jan Mareels, Bill Gauld, Ian Brennan, and Troy Gardner performed admirably as they faced adversity and stiff competition on
the track. Coaches Richard Wong and Brenden Chu were extremely pleased with the level of performance they witnessed at Mount Washington.

Many thanks go out to all the parents, caregivers, head coach Nanci Martin, and coaches Darren Inouye and Vanessa Ho for making this past season a great success!
